The challenge: a new take on a pizza take-away

Our task was to develop a design reflecting the fresh and unique Pizza-Shop concept, so that it would give a flavour of the Italian way of life without falling back on traditionalism.

The design: lunch break in an olive grove

The red, green and white of the Italian flag sings out of the Pizza Rossa shop in City-Point in Nuremberg. In order to evoke Southern Europe in the middle of Bavaria we covered the walls with glass mosaics in a variety of red tones. The interplay of the three colours was accentuated by the green shop front made of back-lit corian and complemented by the white ceiling.

Inspiration for the design of the bar front came from an old olive tree. We took up the theme of a broad trunk and its leaves finding new life as it reaches upwards. The olive leaf pattern cut into the artificial stone cladding by CNC gives a perfect illusion of delicated foliage.

Kerstin Heyroth: 'It was our aim to strength the 'Pizza Rossa' brand with architecture designed especially for the company. Looking at foliage typical of Italy gave us the basis for our design for the Pizzashop, which is now a landmark in the shopping mall.'
