| The challenge: from warehouse to shop |
| Our task was to create two studios from split-level
warehouse space that had been neglected for 40 years. One of them was to be used
by us. |

| The design: making history visible |
| A friendly place to live and work. The
split-level space in Hamburg’s St. Michel quarter served as the ideal base for
this concept. We developed two shops with studios from the former warehouse
space. One faces the courtyard and is linked to a small apartment. An open-plan
kitchen and living area gives the flat the feeling of spaciousness, and a
gallery on the street side of the studio creates additional space for flexible
use. |
| In order to bring the history of the place
alive, we uncovered and restored the original flooring and wall finishes. The
palette employed, which combines a strong red with black and light yellow, is
based on what remained of the original colour scheme. |

| Ralf Kürbitz: 'Unfortunately, we were not
able to retain the original stencil painting. Instead, a light shade of yellow
gives the space a feeling of airiness.' |
